Come and wish the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic a happy 27th birthday on Sunday, January 25.

The Halifax Explosion of 1917 is a story known the world over, but few have heard about the Second Halifax Explosion - an ammunition depot that blew up in July of 1945.

Join Major John McCallum for a fascinating presentation that will explore all aspects of the ill-fated depot, from it’s initial construction in 1926, through the devastating war-time explosion and clean-up effort, to its rebuilding and continued service to the Navy to this day.

Free of charge.

Silver Dart takes to the skies.

Join Brian Cuthbertson for a fascinating presentation about the Silver Dart’s historic flight over Baddeck Bay on February 23, 1909.

Drawing upon his research for the Canada Post stamp commemorating the event’s centennial, Brian will trace the Silver Dart’s story from the formation of the Aerial Experiment Association by Alexander Graham Bell, to the momentous flight itself.

Presented by the Industrial Heritage Society of Nova Scotia

They’re Rough! They’re Tough! They’re TUGS!

Whether they’re towing gigantic oil rigs out to sea, helping huge cruise ships safely into port, or even saving other vessels from fire, sturdy Tugboats prove every day that big doesn’t always mean better.

This March Break, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic proudly presents TUGS, an interactive exhibit that will show the whole family why mighty Tugboats are some of the hardest working ships around!

Public Talk
Where’s the Smoke?

Monday, April 6,
7:30 p.m.

Industrial smoke is almost non-existent within today’s industrial heritage sites and museums. Considering that smoke practically defined the early years of the industrial landscape, this is a striking omission that contributes to an artificial understanding of our past.

Join speaker Robert Summerby-Murray as he makes a compelling case for smoke’s inclusion in contemporary industrial heritage.

Free of charge.

Presented by the Industrial Heritage Society of Nova Scotia
