Research at the Museum
Online research:
Stay tuned for
future development
of online research
resources at the museum.
We presently offer a
TITANIC Research Page
for those researching
this subject.

The Museum conducts research to develop exhibits, to document its collection and to answer public enquiries. Two recent major research projects were a survey of small craft throughout the province to document vanishing designs and traditional boatbuilding methods, and an oral history programme to record life aboard the hydrographic ship CSS Acadia and cableships that operated from Halifax. The Museum offers annual research grants for marine history and works with a number of research associates to explore topics of mutual interest.

The Museum also has several research associates, who undertake to provide ongoing research into a variety of maritime themes. Several of these projects have been featured as part of our lecture series and others as research papers that are now available to the public.

Please give as much notice as possible, so we can assist you most effectively. The Museum's archival holdings are limited. Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management has the most extensive collection of this material.

Please note: We do not have passenger lists or genealogical material.

The Library collection includes over 5000 book titles relating to merchant ships and shipping, navigation, seamanship, shipwrecks, the Royal and Canadian Navy and many other maritime subjects. Our primary focus is Nova Scotia marine history, but since Nova Scotia's ships travelled the world, the collection has an international component.

Published sources include shipping registers from the late 1700s to date, such as Lloyds, Bureau Veritas, Record of American and Foreign Shipping and Transport Canada's List of Ships; guides to navigation; pamphlets; current periodicals, including several on model building; newsletters; and historical periodicals. The Library does not have immigration records or passenger lists.

The Library also houses the Museum's collection of more than 20,000 photographs, as well as a collection of vessel plans and navigational charts. You may browse photocopies of our images on such popular topics as CSS Acadia, schooner Bluenose, and the Halifax Explosion of 1917.
